Physical Therapy for Softball Players

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY BENEFIT SOFTBALL PLAYERS?

Success in softball requires dedication, good teamwork and a strong, resilient body. It also requires the right professionals to teach you how to play and to help keep your body injury-free as much as possible so that you can enjoy the game for many seasons. While your coaches are in charge of honing your technical skills, you can count on your physical therapist to help you with the other. Not only are physical therapists experts in rehabilitation and recovery from injuries like those that can affect softball players, they are masters of injury prevention and movement analysis, three qualities necessary for optimizing performance in a competitive sport like softball. Working or consulting with a physical therapist can help you minimize time lost to injury and enhance performance across many seasons.

WHAT DOES PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR SOFTBALL PLAYERS LOOK LIKE?

There are many different services that physical therapists can offer softball players. My team and I offer individualized injury and surgery rehabilitation programs to help you recover and ensure you are ready to return to the field. Physical therapists can also help create custom injury-prevention and prehab programs to help individual players prevent an injury or prevent recurrence of a previous injury. Additionally we address any aches and pains that may arise from training off the field and in the training room. We will always start by getting to know your concerns and goals and performing a thorough physical exam. After this we will create an individualized therapy program to facilitate full recovery from any existing injuries, to address risk factors for future injuries and target any existing impairments that may impact sport performance.

HOW LONG WILL I NEED PHYSICAL THERAPY?

The length of a physical therapy plan of care may last only a few visits if the goal is to establish an exercise program for an uninjured player looking to reduce future injury risk and maximize performance. It could also last much longer if a player needs to undergo rehabilitation for a specific injury or following a surgery. Your therapist will discuss this with you at your first visit so that you know what to expect.

WHAT PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO SOFTBALL PLAYERS?

As mentioned above, there are many ways in which a physical therapist can support a softball player. Here are some of the services that we offer to players to support them in their careers as a player:

Movement and Performance Analyses

While having fun should always be a priority for any athlete, let’s face it, being the best player you can is probably high on your list as well. Being able to perform at your best requires that your body has enough strength, power, endurance, flexibility, etc. to not only perform your role on the field but also to manage the high training volumes on the field and in the training room. As movement experts, your physical therapist can assess your form with common training exercises like deadlifts, squats, bench press, plyometrics, and upper body exercises and give you insight on how to optimize the movements to enhance effectiveness and also decrease injury risk. Similarly, they can analyze common movement patterns utilized during softball play and determine if there are areas of weakness or impairments that should be addressed through a comprehensive training program.

This is often done as part of a program to address injury or complaints of pain, tightness or soreness with training. Early identification of errors in form or impairments in areas such as strength or flexibility is paramount for optimizing training and performance.

Injury rehabilitation

Physical therapists are trained extensively in injury rehabilitation. Like all athletes, softball players are at risk for experiencing injuries that can impact their ability to continue playing. These injuries can occur during practice, during games and even in the training room. Some examples of injuries that physical therapists treat in softball players are as follows:

  • Ligament sprains
  • Muscle strains
  • Muscle contusions
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Shoulder labral tears
  • Elbow injuries
  • Shoulder instability
  • Knee and ankle ligament injuries
  • Wrist sprains or tendonitis
  • Fractures
  • Concussions
  • Overuse injuries
While it may be tempting to self-treat or ignore injuries, failure to fully rehabilitate an injury can predispose you to recurrent or more severe injuries. There are several benefits related to injury and post-surgical rehabilitation that working with a physical therapist can provide you including assurance that you are fully recovered from the injury and that the injured tissues are prepared to take on the unique forces and stresses associated with softball.

End Injury Progression

Physical therapyfor softball players has proven to slow and even stop pain issues and injury progression in many cases.

Relieve Pain

The movements used in this technique can target your lower back, upper back, arms, hips, shoulders, and neck helping you to manage pain during the course of your physical therapy treatments.

Improve Range of Motion

Posture awareness is an important area to focus on due to the fact that certain positions may cause you further back pain.

Restore Mobility

You can gain mobility and flexibility by taking part in the stretches and exercises as prescribed by your physical therapist.

How Long Will Softball Player Physical Therapy Treatments Last?

If you decide to work with a physical therapist to help correct your softball related issues, your entire treatment plan could consist of around 8-20+ different physical therapy sessions that will each last 60-90 minutes. Once you complete your customized physical therapy treatment plan, you will be able to continue to do the prescribed stretches and exercises utilized during your softball PT sessions yet in the comfort of your own home.

Identify and address the underlying cause of an injury

While full recovery and return to play is the ultimate goal when it comes to injury rehabilitation, a physical therapist has much more to offer. We are interested in identifying the factors that may have predisposed you to the injury in the first place so that we can make a plan to address them. This helps decrease your risk for future injury. Here are some factors that we look for when assessing a player:

  • Muscle strength, power and endurance
  • Flexibility and mobility in muscles and joints
  • Sleep, nutrition and recovery time
  • Training schedule
  • History of prior injury
  • The physical demands of a player’s position on the team
  • Other sports and activities in which the player is involved
While some injuries are unavoidable, there may be times when internal and external factors play a role. Identifying these factors allows us to address them with a good physical therapy program or give advice on helpful modifications or adjustments to your training.

So, if you are a softball player who has never had an opportunity to work with a physical therapist we hope you can now see the many benefits of doing so. We want to work alongside your coaches, athletic trainers and family members to help give you a softball career that is long and successful whether you are playing in an adult rec league or for your college team. Give us a call today to learn more about how we can help you take your athletic endeavors to the next level.
